Dermatologists often advocate the use of cold pressed oils, as oppose to hot pressed oils, for dry, sensitive skin. So, what’s the difference?

When oils from nuts, fruit or seeds are obtained using the cold pressed technique, they are crushed at high speed using a modern steel press. This method protects the oils from trans fats, rancidity and toxic chemicals and ensures that the oils retain all their natural flavour, aroma and nutritional value. The friction that occurs in this process may generate a little heat but not enough to have an effect the nutritional properties of the oils. The oil gradually surfaces and is then separated from the remainder of the fruit or seed by the process of centrifugation and is then filtered.

The hot pressed technique, as the name implies, uses very high temperatures to remove oils from nuts, fruits or seeds. This method is used widely by the industry as it tends to generate more oil, but at a cost of degrading the quality of the oil as well as altering the colour. The cold pressed technique ensures that oils are safely extracted without the use of solvents and chemicals which is usually harmful to the skin.
